I am pretty sure everyone has a love-hate relationship with Instagram and its algorithm.

Have you ever had one of those experiences where your reach has been doing well, and then all of a sudden it just plummets for no reason?   I know this happens to almost everyone every time there is a new update to Instagram or the algorithm, and you feel like you have to rebuild again from scratch. So next time that happens, here are four quick tips on how you can get rapid traction.

 1. Take a closer look at your content

Are you sharing content that is valuable for your followers or are you just sharing your portfolio over and over again? If you are just sharing your portfolio and not actually sharing tips and tricks,  personal content,  business updates, milestones, or simple fun “hacks” people can use ; there is a good chance that your followers might be bored with your content! Yes, even pretty pictures can get boring after some time.  Next time you feel like your engagement is dropping try spicing things up a little bit with a new type of post you haven’t done in a while.

2. Take a closer look at your hashtags

You want to make sure you have a solid mix of hashtags regarding the amount of reach you can get. Here are my top 3 tips –

  1. Start with local hashtags then expand out to larger hashtags for more reach
  2. Keep a solid mix of hashtags under 10,000 posts, hashtags over 100,000, and hashtags over 1,000,000. This allows you to go into hashtags that could help your post go semi-viral and still be seen by ideal clients.
  3. Use all 30 hashtags spots! ( Or at least 20 of them! ) I see so many people complaining about their reach but when I check their hashtags, they used less than 10!

3. Start tagging people and vendors more often

This is especially important as a photographer who is trying to get ahead in the algorithm. Tag your clients whenever you share a post with them in it, tag vendors whenever you share a post with them in it, Tag stores that you buy your clothing from that you are wearing and photos. Just become very aware of what you’re sharing and who you can tag in that post or image to get traction. Plus, as people look at the tagged accounts and click over to check out those accounts, Instagram counts towards your interaction and bumps you higher in the algorithm. It’s a win, win!
